FAQ #15
15. What are the rules in my area concerning alimony, and property splits? Should I move somewhere else to improve my position?
Each of my practice areas, Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia, have different rules and interpretations on many of the aspects of divorce law. If you think that your spouse would accept a negotiated settlement process, then some of these differences can be overcome by your mutual decisions. However, since our three jurisdictions are so close together, it is not unusual for people to move across state lines for various reasons, including job convenience, good schools, and tax advantages, so this could be a factor to consider in planning a divorce.
